Lucia left a job in hospitality to take care of people in a different and more rewarding context – working in a residential aged care facility.

“My intention has always been to work in care. I love looking after people, making them feel their best. That’s why hospitality was great but during lockdown I had time to reflect on what I really wanted to do. And I realised there was a lot more I could do.”

This passion for care, combined with Lucia’s background in hospitality stood her in good stead when she directly approached Village in the Park about a role as a caregiver. She got an interview and got the job.

“I am now doing what I have always truly wanted to do. I get to be my authentic self all the time, which is awesome. I get to be happy, to be silly with all the residents. They love it and it’s lots of fun.”

Lucia is working with people who are living well with dementia, an area she finds fascinating and compelling. As part of that she is working toward her Level 3 and 4 Healthcare Certificates.

“It’s so rewarding as well as very humbling. I feel genuinely so lucky, privileged to be helping people feel loved, protected and empowered. It’s like being family.

“Helping bring some joy. I can go home at the end of the day knowing I have done that.”

Another benefits of the job is flexibility, with her employer willing to accommodate different work schedules to fit around her life. Caregiving is also a pathway to Lucia’s ultimate goal of moving into nursing.
